Summer H2O

Choosing the fabric for the Summer H2O block was a bit easier than Spring, but I had a little more problem with the composition of the block.

I do believe all of these fabrics made the final cut and then some.

Right off the bat I did like these fabrics.

I also liked the sky and the ocean.

But, something was just not right with the composition.
This girl does not look good standing in the middle of the ocean all by herself.
I needed to stand her a little to one side and add something; maybe some birds in the air or a sailboat in the background.
No, she needed something right there in the foreground with her.
My daughter suggested the beach ball and that is exactly what she needed.

Spring H2O

Choosing the fabric for the Spring block of our Row By Row was not nearly as easy as Winter.

Some of the fabric here did not make the final cut.

These boots just were not working.

The blond hair did not show up like I wanted it too.

I do not like that umbrella.

Something is not working here but I am not sure what it is.
Could it be the hair?

Blond hair is not the answer.
Maybe I just need to put it on the background to see how it looks.

Big NO to the puddle!
I think maybe the umbrella needs to be only one fabric.

I was fortunate to be able to order more of the fabric I used for rain in our April Monthly Mini last year. Don't you think that is the most perfect fabric for rain?

Winter H2O

After I had all of the blocks designed for the 2015 Row By Row then the fun began; choosing the fabrics.

Actually, Winter was really pretty simple since it is taken for one of our Monthly Minis.

I really like this monthly mini so I kept the fabrics as close to that as possible.

There were just a few changes because of fabric I no longer had.

Stitching around the applique with a contrasting thread using a blanket stitch really brings out the detail.

In The Beginning

Here is a sneak peek of our Row By Row for 2015

Quilt Vine will be participating in "Row By Row Experience" once again this year.
The dates for this Shop Hop is June 21 - September 8, 2015.
If you are not familiar with Row By Row go here to find out more.

The theme for this year is H2O.
After thinking long and hard on this I decided to represent H2O in all 4 seasons.
I am going to share with you my thought process in to designing this row.

Many of you may be familiar with our Monthly Minis.
I am using the design from the January and November Minis in our row.

For Winter, snow is our H2O.
To use this in our row all I had to due with it was to make it smaller.

For Fall the marsh is our H2O, and I used our November Mini.
To use this in our row I made it smaller, removed the dog, added cattails, and placed the boy in a marsh.

For Spring rain is our H2O.
I wanted to use a girl in the rain but our
April Mini just wasn't what I was looking for.
I changed this quite a bit to used it in our Row.
I redesigned this block to go better with the other blocks.

I didn't like the first drawing because I think she needed hair.

It still wasn't what I wanted so I made her rain coat shorter.

Doesn't she look much better.

For Summer the Ocean is our H2O.
Since I already had two boys, this one needed to be a girl.
At first I tried a flat hat, a two piece swimming suit, and water wings.

It just wasn't what I wanted.
I changed the hat and the swim suit bottom.

This still just wasn't right, so I got rid of the water wings and added an inner tube.

I thought I would try a one piece suit and I liked it much more.

After the basic design of the blocks was completed then the fun began; choosing the fabric!

Choosing the fabric is fun but also very difficult.
Last year we made so many kits that we ran out of some of the fabrics and it was troublesome trying to find substitutes. So, while choosing the fabrics for this year's row I was very careful to pick a lot of fabrics that I can reorder.

I have the row completed and I will continue to post how it progressed.

On the Other Side

My daughter and I left the Eastern Shore today and ventured over to the other side of the Chesapeake Bay. We had our own mini shop hop. Our first stop was Seminal Sampler in Catonsville, Maryland. There I purchased 1 1/2 yards of this fabric. I think it is a Valorie Wells print.

Our next stop was in Savage, Maryland at And Sew It Goes. Unfortunately this shop is going out of business. Most of the products that are left are 40 - 50% off.

Our final stop on our little shop hop was at Cotton Seed Glory in Annapolis, Maryland. I bought these two patterns there. I was so excited to find this Maryland applique block. I started my personal Baltimore Album in 2006. I still have 2 blocks to make. I have lived in 2 different states in my life; Pennsylvania and Maryland. I have been wanting to make blocks for those states. I thought I was going to have to design my own. This pattern will be perfect for my Maryland block. Apparently this designer, Pearl Pereira , is going to do all of the states. I can't wait until she does Pennsylvania.

After our little shop hop we went to the mall and we each bought a pair of shoes. Then we went to eat at the fabulous Cheesecake Factory! What a great day!
