Margaret's Flowers

Margaret made this fabulous quilt.

She quilted each block before she put it together.

She did thread painting in each of the large flowers.

Margaret quilted the white on white flowers also.

I just had to quilt the sashing and borders and enough in the blocks to keep it all together and evenly quilted.

I did need to add some leaves in the setting triangles.

Design Wall Monday

This quilt was made by Eunice, of course for a new baby. Those fish are so adorable. I did some quick and easy quilting and that seems to be all it needed.

I was a naughty girl today. Yes, I went fabric shopping. Our local quilt shop had a Super Bowl Sale. 25% off everything in the store. My friend had given me a gift card for there for Christmas. I only purchased

4 1/4 yards and I still have $1.89 left on the card. Guess I wasn't so naughty after all.

Friday Night Sewing

Last night at 7-Sisters I got my back put together for my Sew Simple Pineapple Quilt. I am not really into these colors of fabric anymore so I tried to use a lot of it on the back. Earleen really likes these fabrics so I gave her some of my leftovers. I gave her about 2 1/2 yards. I told her that would be good for my weekly stash report.

This is Earleen's quilt. She was auditioning borders. We all think she will need to purchase something darker for the small inner border.

Chris put the final touches on the top of her Trash to Treasure Pineapple Quilt. I am loving this quilt. The border is just perfect!

Circle Quilt

Mod Medallions Moving Along

In the evenings I have been working on my 50th Birthday Quilt. I posted about it here before.

I have all of my medallions machine quilted on the background. Now I am trying to choose the fabric for the sashing.

I am having a little trouble deciding on the sashing. I had thought I would have to buy fabric for the border. But while I was looking for sashing I came across this fabric that I love that I think will be perfect for the border. I have 4 yards of the Kaffe Fassett fabric. My mom picked it up for me about 6 years ago when she went to visit my sister in Washington State. I love it and have had trouble bringing myself to cut into it. Now I found the perfect use for it.

Now back to the sashing. Of all of the fabrics I auditioned I only have enough of 2 of them. So I might have to purchase some fabric.

I do have enough of this gray but I do not like it here. I think it is too dark and it takes away from the medallions.

I also have enough of this light aqua with dots. I originally thought I would use something light because I wanted the medallions to stand out. I just do not know yet if this is what I will use. I am trying to convince myself I should use this so I do not have to buy anything. Remember that stash report!

I am going to a quilt shop with a friend tomorrow. I would like to have an idea what I will use so if I need to buy some fabric I can get it tomorrow.

I guess I will sleep on it and look at these pictures again in the morning.

Another Blackbird Quilt

The Sky Before the Storm

A few days ago we had a storm blow in.

I happened to let the dog out just before the storm hit and the clouds were amazing.

I just had to grab my camera and get a few shots.

The clouds were rolling along quickly and it looked like the whole sky was moving.

Of course the pictures really do not do it any justice.

Within a minute it was pouring.

January UFO is Complete

It was a beautiful cold windy day to be outside.

I got the binding put on with a couple days to spare.

I got this table last summer. I have not yet put extra polyurethane on it, so I always put a quilt or tablecloth on when we eat. It is 60 inch round without any leaves. When I made this quilt I made it the right size to use it as a tablecloth.

So, 2012 is off to a good start.

Today I spent the entire day at the Trappe Fire House quilting. Each year the 7-Sisters make a quilt and raffle it off for the Trappe Fire Company. Today we started the quilt for 2012. This year we are making a Storm at Sea.

Cheryl was our fearless leader instructing us on the construction of the blocks.

Patti is very happy with her blocks so far.

Lou is busy trimming a block.

Margaret shows her blocks.

Of course as with any quilting gathering we had to eat.

For breakfast we had ambrosia and monkey bread.

There sure wasn't much monkey bread left.

For lunch we had the best ever white chicken chili. Lou made it using a Pampered Chef Recipe. As you can see we really did a number on the chili. Here is Lou cleaning the crock pot.

For dessert we had Apple Crisp that Patti's husband made in a crock pot. Not much of that good stuff left either.

It was a great day spent with great friends and we got a lot accomplished.

"Love Letters"

I love this quilt.

It is a pattern by Blackbird Designs called "Love Letters"

Marlyne did a fantastic job on it.

Her hand applique is exquisite!

Seeing quilts like this make me wish I would take the time to do more hand applique.

You know I said I love this quilt. Come to think of it, I don't think I ever saw a Blackbird Design that I didn't like.

Customer's Quilt

I do not usually post pictures of quilts that I just quilt with a pantogram but this quilt is really unique. Heather made this for her new granddaughter Stella. Heather is going to hand quilt some of the important information in the border.

Here is another one of Colette's wedding quilts. She has made so many of these I have lost count.

I think she makes on for everyone she knows that gets married.

To help keep the cost down she has me do a pantogram in the center and I only custom quilt the borders.

I quilted my UFO for January.

It is almost like the one I made for my son's girlfriend for Christmas.

I love green and had to have one for myself.

Now I need to get it bound before the end of the month.

Stash Report - Week 4, 2012

The fabric that I used and purchased this week was for these 2 quilts. Well, most of the fabric I purchased was for these quilts. I have been trying to stay away from buying fabric without a specific purpose in mind. I went to JoAnn's because I needed White Kona. I bought 6 1/2 yards of white but I also bought 2 yards of Gray Kona. Don't ask me what I am going to use that for yet. I had to buy so much white because I could not find what I had at home. Of course after I bought it I did find mine. It was in with another one of my WIPs. I still did need to get more because I would not have had enough. Now I do have some extra white on hand

This week I used 4 yards of white for my Joseph's Coat. For my Mod Medallions I used 3 1/4 yards of white and 3 1/4 yards of prints.

Mod Medallions

This week I have also been working on "Mod Medallions." This is my 50th Birthday Quilt. All of the fabric in this quilt was given to me for my birthday except 2 of the oranges and 2 of the greens. Those fabrics were used in the decorations at my party.

I have been giving it a lot of thought to what pattern I wanted to use for this special quilt. I thought that this pattern, Mod Medallions was perfect for highlighting this fabric. The method I decided to use is raw edge applique with fusible web so I can get it finished more quickly.

Sewing not Posting

One of my New Year's Resolutions is to spend less time on the computer and more time on my quilting.

This week in the evenings I have been working on my 2nd Joseph's Coat. I posted about starting it here. Most of these greens I got this past summer when we were visiting my sister and her family in Washington state.

This week I finished preparing all of the petals and got them all put on the background fabric. All of the blocks are ready to be machine appliqued.

Below is a list of quilts that I am working on. I have no illusion of finishing them this year, but I would like to work on them.

This first quilt I have not actually started yet, but I would like to get a lot done on it this year. I will be using the fabrics that were given to me as a gift for my 50th birthday.

The back will have this fabric that was signed by my family and friends that attended my party. I am not certain of the pattern I will use but I am leaning toward this one "Mod Medallions."

I plan on working on my second Joseph's Coat that I started in 2011.

This "Classic Bouquet Quilt" was started in a class at Bayside Quilters many years ago, probably about 2003 or 2004. Originally it was to be hand appliqued but I most likely will be machine appliqueing it.

This bluebird quilt is hand appliqued. It was started in the Baltimore Bee of Bayside Quilters a long time ago. I really do not know when it was started, maybe 2004?

The pattern has 9 blocks. I decided to do 4 thinking that way I would get it done. Just one more block to go. Maybe someday I will get it done.

This is my personal Baltimore Album. This is the quilt that I always wanted to make. It is hand appliqued and the final 2 blocks will also be hand appliqued.

Each block is significant to me.

When I get it finished I will explain each block.

The thing that is holding me up is that I want to design the final 2 blocks.

I really just need to make it a priority.

I think I started this quilt in 2005 and I have not worked on it since 2006.

Stash Report - Week 1, 2012

It is the beginning of the new year and we are a back to all zeros for the stash report. Last year I started out a little slow when it came to stash busting. Through out the year I purchased almost 110 yards of fabrics. I finally pulled it off and came out in the black with a net of 36.75 yards of fabric used for the year. I can't deny that I like to buy fabric. So, my goal for 2012 is to do better stash busting than I did in 2011. This week everything remains at zero; nothing in and nothing out.

2012 UFO Challenge

Once again for 2012 I will be participating in Judy's UFO Challenge. Since Judy posted her list and the sign up to participate in the upcoming year, I have spent a lot of time thinking about my UFO list. Last year I foolishly listed 18 UFOs. This year I am only going to list 12 (really 13) even though I do have more than that. The other thing that I decided to do is that I am going to prioritize my list. I will be completing my UFOs in the order that I have listed. I have several UFOs that I do not care to finish this year that I will not even be listing.

Here is my UFO list for 2012 in the order that I will most likely be completing them:

0. I started this jacket in April 2010 in a class at Bayside Quilters. The sleeves are too short and I need to add cuffs. Other than that it just needs a binding. I did not give the jacket a number because I WILL be finishing that jacket sometime this year when I decide what to do with the cuffs.

1. “It’s All About the Green” This quilt is just like the one I made for my son’s girlfriend for Christmas. I pieced the top in December 2011.

2. This Round Robin Quilt top was made in a Round Robin Bee that I participated in 2010-2011.

3. This Signature Quilt was started in 2007 for SON #1’s graduation from college. I did not finish it sooner because my son had blocks that he was going to have friends sign. Well, he never did have friends sign them. It looks like his quilt will only have signatures of family members. I told him that I wanted to finish his quilt this year. He is to give the unsigned blocks back to me. If he can’t find them I will have to make more.

4. This Trash to Treasure Pineapple Quilt was started in a class at Bayside Quilters with Gyleen Fitzgerald in May 2011.

5. This Sew Simple Pineapple Quilt was started in a workshop in January 2011. I had collected the dark red and gold for many years. For about a year I had been thinking about what I could do with those fabrics. I am very pleased with this pattern. They are really not my favorite colors anymore but I love how this quilt is looking.

6. This quilt is really an old one. It is so old that I started hand quilting it. It is from before I had my longarm, and even before I took my quilts to a longarmer. It probably dates to 1999. It was a mystery quilt taught in a class by Peggy of Peggy’s Sewing Center at the 7-Sisters Quilt Guild. You can see on the back where the stars are hand quilted. I plan to finish it on the longarm so I can get it done.

7. This quilt was started in a workshop with Jane Sassaman in August 2011. I am fascinated with Jane’s work and was very excited to be able to take her workshop.

8. I think this log cabin was started in 2000. I was making it for my bed. I really am not crazy about those fabrics anymore. I plan on painting my bedroom this year, so if I do not get it done soon I may never get to use it on my bed. This one was on my UFO list for 2011. I really do need to get it done.

9. This small quilt is hand appliquéd. I finished the top in early 2010. It was on my UFO list for 2011.

10. This wholecloth quilt top was purchased at the Lancaster Quilt Show in 2004 before I got my longarm. I have wanted to make a wholecloth quilt, but before I spend the time designing my own it does make sense to practice on this one first.

11. And 12. These 2 quilt tops were made in about 2007. They are for the twin beds in one of the guest rooms. If I do not finish them soon I will probably repaint that room. Again they were on the UFO list for 2011.

I am trying to get organize for 2012 and I hope to get all of these quilts completed.

Other Finishes for 2011

All of the quilts I completed in 2011.

2011 proved to be a very productive year for me. I had about the same amount of longarm business that I have had the past few years and I finished 20 of my own quilts. That is by far the most quilts I have ever finished in one year. Eleven of those quilts were UFOs from previous years. Those 11 quilts were finished by participating in a UFO Challenge over at Patchwork Times. The other 9 were quilts that I started and completed in 2011. They are pictured below.

This quilt was actually pieced in December2010 and quilted and bound in January 2011.

It was a baby quilt for Amelia.

I do not have many Valentine decorations so I made some table toppers for Valentines Day. I made 5 small toppers and am counting them as one quilt.

My Art Bee had a "common object" challenge. At one of our meetings in the fall (October 2010) we each brought a common object in a paper bag and we drew a bag. We did show each other the object that was in our bag. My common object was a wire whisk. We were to make a small quilt using this object in some way. I simply used the whisk as a pattern for the flower petals.

This quilt was made for the Bayside Quilters Challenge in June. The Challenge was Bear/Bare. Mine was titled "Bare Feet At The Beach." The photo is of my niece and daughter in 2008. I won for the category of "Best Use Of Technique." The method I used was Altered Photo Artistry by Beth Wheeler.

This "Blooming 9-Patch" was started in a class at Bayside Quilters in April.

I made this Lightning Quilt during Hurricane Irene the end of August. Thank goodness our electric never went out.

At Seven Sisters Quilt Guild we had a fabric exchange. We were each to bring 2 strips of medium/dark and 2 strips of light neutral fabrics for each participant. The strips were 6 inches wide and 9 of us participated. This is my finished quilt. I finished it in September. I did not realize until right now that I never took her outside for her photo shoot. I will have to do that later.

This "Sew Simple Pineapple Quilt" was made for my newest great-nephew.

This quilt was made for a Christmas gift for my son's girlfriend.

2011 UFO Summary

Of the 18 UFOs I listed in December 2010, 11 were completed. Even listing 18 was crazy to begin with. I am very excited about the 11 that I did get done. I am so thankful for Judy's UFO Challenge because it really motivated me to finish some of my own quilts.

Here are the UFOs that I did finish in 2011.

This Kaleidoscope String Quilt was started in March 2008 in a class with Bayside Quilters.

This dimensional hand applique was started in my Baltimore Album Bee last year in 2009.

The inspiration for this top is the Jane Sassaman fabrics. It was pieced in 2005.

I finished this top in early 2010. It was a block of the month from "The Quilt Show" in 2008.

I got this quilt top a long time ago at an auction that my quilt guild had. The center was finished and there was fabric included for the border. I think I put the borders on at retreat in 2007. I am not sure how old it is but it is vintage fabrics.

This quilt is machine appliqued. It is probably from about 2006.

This quilt top was from a block exchange with my mom and sisters. I think it is from about 1999 or 2000.

This scrappy top was made from a block exchange with my mom and sisters in 2004-2005. The inspiration for this quilt came from a quilt we saw at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in 2004.

This top was baby sized. I made a throw in 2010 and this was made with the left-overs. I decided to add borders to make it large enough for a gift for a friend.

This star quilt was started in 2004 when I went to visit my sister in Washington state. While we were there we went to the Sisters Oregon Quilt Show. It was a 6 hour drive and I appliqued when I was not driving. My sister gave me the extra stars and circles from a quilt she was working on. I put the top together at retreat in 2007.

This Joseph's Coat was started in early 2010. I was following along with a quilt-along but I fell behind. In the quilt-along they were hand appliqueing but I appliqued mine on the machine. I was so excited to get this done. I think it is the most beautiful quilt I have ever made.

Christmas Green

I did get the quilt finished in time for Christmas for my son's girlfriend.

I think she really likes it!

This quilt is just like the one that I made during Hurricane Irene and posted about it here.

I ended up making 2 quilts like this.

The first top I made had all different greens in it.

My daughter and I decided that we really did not like the dark greens in it.

I will keep that one for myself.

I made this one without the darkest greens for the girlfriend.

It looks so much better than the other one and I am very happy with how it turned out.

Christmas Quilts

These 2 Christmas quilts were made by Mary Lou.

I also made this quilt last year.

I really like how the overall ribbon quilting looks on this quilt.

This quilt has ribbon and holly quilted in the background but it is a little difficult to see it.

Mary Lou did a great job on both of them!

The Middle of December Already

This baby quilt was for my newest great-nephew. I finally got it totally finished, label and all, and delivered over the weekend. The pattern is from the book Sew Simple Pineapple by Karin Hellaby.

Remember this quilt? It was my UFO for September. Kari is that special person to receive this quilt. Do you see the label pinned onto the front? Yes, I still have the quilt and I need to get that sewn on the back. Maybe I will get it on today.

I decided that for Christmas I would make a quilt for my son's girlfriend.

I got this quilt started the week after Thanksgiving when my husband was in Pennsylvania deer hunting. It is the same pattern like this one. Her favorite color is green. This quilt is made from many different greens from my stash. I used green where the other one is white and I used white where the other one is orange. I do have the top done but have not taken a picture. Hopefully I will be quilting it soon.

Star Full Of Feathers

I got finished quilting Kathy's quilt in plenty of time for Christmas.

I am not sure what the pattern is, but I would consider it a take on a lone star.

Kathy wanted feathers and I just LOVE it when a customer wants feathers.

It also seems like when I have a quilt with feathers that I take way too many pictures of it.

The quilting really does show up pretty nicely on it.

Are you tired of looking at it yet?

Not me.

The quilting looks good on the back too.

You could almost reverse it and use it as a whole cloth quilt.

Did I tell you that I LOVE feathers?

I am now working on some things for Christmas. I probably will not be quilting for a while but I will be sewing on my domestic machine.

I am in love with this quilt, so there are a lot of pictures.

I love the soft colors and the quilting really shows up nicely.

Lucille asked for feathers so she got lots of feathers.

Photo Shoot for Joseph's Coat

Today I took my Joseph's Coat outside for his photo shoot.

I absolutely love Fall and he looked so nice outside among the leaves.

I ended up having way too many pictures that I love.

So, this post has a lot of pictures of my Joseph's Coat.

The steers are pretty nosy and they had to see what I was up to. But they did keep their distance.

I decided to finish this one off for my November UFO in Judy's UFO Challenge. This was number 5a on my list of UFOs for 2011

Because of the curves I had to do a bias binding.

I am not thrilled with how the binding turned out.

But I guess it is okay for my first one like this.

The binding was cut 2 1/4 inches wide. I should have cut it smaller because you can see here there was too much to turn to the back. It would have laid nicer if it had been smaller.

Alex and Stan kept a close eye on my every move. They will be going to the butcher in less than a month.

Joseph's Coat Almost Finished

I decided that for my November UFO I really wanted to finish up my Joseph's coat.

Saturday was a good day to work on my quilt because I usually do not work on customer's quilts on the weekends.

Yesterday my husband and son were hunting and my daughter went shopping with a friend, so I had all day, making it the perfect day to finish my quilt.

I actually had it out Friday night preparing it to be quilted.

I needed to add fabric on all four sides so I had something to pin on the longarm and to make a nice finished edge.

I got the top machine appliqued on to the strips Friday night. Sorry I did not get a picture of this.

Saturday morning it was ready to be quilted. As you can see from the first few pictures I just did simple quilting. I knew the most difficult part would be the binding.

With the light thread I stitched a scant 1/4 inch around the entire quilt so I would have a guide to follow to cut off the excess around the edge.

I stitched the whole way down into the first dip. I quickly realized that I did not want to do that because then I would have really tight inside corners to bind.

I decided to make it a more gentle curve. I used a spool of thread for the guide for my curve.

After stitching around the entire top I trimmed to that stitching.

I got the bias binding sewn on the top and last night while watching TV I worked on hand sewing it down on the back. I did not get it completed before falling asleep. I hope to finish it today.

Maybe by March I will even have some of the green one put together.

Today I did some real damage to my stash report. Yes, again. It is all because I went with my husband on a business trip to Las Vegas.

See, last year I went with him on this same trip. It was my first time to Las Vegas. When we were flying out last year to come home I met a quilter in the airport. I had a total hip replacement some years back and I have to go through the scanner and wait to be cleared when I fly.

I happened to have on a pair of socks from the The Twisted Stitcher that have quilt designs on them. The security lady standing with me waiting to clear me to go ahead saw my socks and asked me if I was a quilter.

We had a conversation until the next person came through the scanner. She told me there was a great quilt shop near by.

So, before heading out on the trip this year I found that quilt shop online.

The quilt shop I visited today is Quiltique in Henderson.

WOW!

I think I can honestly say that is the best quilt shop I have ever been to.

Quilters have got to be the best group of people on this earth. I met my Christian sister in the longarm room.

The lady that cut my fabric was originally from Pennsylvania close to where I grew up.

It really is a small world.

They have a classroom that is to die for. Maybe if we do this same trip next year I can take a class.

And I got to see Swoon live and in person. (the quilt on the left) I have been thinking about ordering that pattern and when I saw it for real that clinched the deal. I will be ordering that after I get home.

2011 UFO Update

Number 3 was chosen for November for Judy's UFO Challenge. This king sized log cabin is what I have labeled as #3. The center was made about 10 years ago. It was planned to have pieced borders, but I decided to just slap some borders on and get it done. I had applied these borders at The Bayside Quilters Retreat in early March 2010. I made this to go in my master bedroom. I am not as crazy about this quilt now like I was when I started. I am much more drawn to brighter fabrics now. It will still look good in my bedroom as it is still plum, but I have been thinking about repainting it. It would be really great to get it done this month and actually use it on my bed.

This picture was taken at the 2010 Retreat when I got the borders put on.

It appears that I made a mistake in a previous post when I said I was all caught up with the UFO Challenge. I did not complete a UFO for July.

Number 2 was drawn for July. I actually had 2 quilts listed for that month. No really it was 3. I had this small hand appliqued one and the 2 twin size quilts below. What was I thinking when I put all of that for one number? Anyway none of them got done.

But, to be fair and not beat myself up for falling behind on the Challenge, I did get 2 quilts done for January. So, for the year I have 10 UFOs completed!

That is a lot more than if I had not participated in the Challenge.

A Few Days to Spare

So, for 4 long years it has been waiting to be quilted. Thank goodness for Judy and her UFO Challenge. At the beginning of the year I listed 18 projects that were started. What was I thinking? But I will be ecstatic to finish 12 of them.

These blocks are from my sister that I worked on when I was with my her so it is very special to me.

Not all that long ago these are the types of fabric that I was drawn to.

September UFO Finally Finished

Here we are almost the end of October and I finally finish my September UFO. I am participating in Judy's UFO Challenge at Patchwork Times. I just couldn't be happier with it. This quilt below I made in September/October 2010. I had some leftover blocks so I put them together for a baby quilt. I put it on my UFO list this year thinking that I just needed to quilt it. When its number popped up for September I had to rethink my plan for it.

I have had the one I made last year hanging in my family room all summer. There is someone in my life that is just in love with that quilt. She told me so every time she saw it. I was thinking it would be nice to do something special for her. When this quilt came up in September I knew what I wanted to do. This quilt needed to be bigger. Now I had to find fabric for borders.

First I looked on line to find fabric to match the floral fabric I have in the blocks. The largest piece I could find was 1 yard and that was just not enough and I did not want to piece it on a side. So I went to my local quilt shop, Lilies of the Field, and found the blue border fabric that is just the perfect touch to finish off this quilt. I am loving this quilt. I think I might like this one better than mine.

Yesterday I bound this quilt along with my October UFO. It was raining so I had to take the pictures on the porch.

Binding Day

Today was a binding day. I got the bindings put on my September UFO and my October UFO. I don't think I even mentioned that I was working on my October UFO. I quilted it earlier this week. Now I am caught up with the UFO Challenge.

Many times when I take a quilt off of the longarm and hang it to take its picture I am in awe of how good it looks. It is really good to get a different perspective on it.

This is especially true with a large quilt like this one. I think that by the time I am nearing the end I am getting tired of looking at it. Yes, I do love variety! Anyway, when I stepped back to look at this quilt after I hung it I said, "Oh My Gosh!" out loud.

More on the quilts I posted about yesterday. I just can't seem to get them out of my head.

Upon taking a closer look at this one it appears to be a variation on a lone star, except for points that are in what is typically the setting squares and setting triangles.

The two lighter oranges are larger lone star diamonds. Larger pieces makes for quicker piecing.

The yellow and the darkest outside orange are just the smaller diamonds like the center.

Like I said yesterday, I think the border would be the most difficult part to figure out.

Remember these two from yesterday? They look like they are also a variation on the lone star. Just a lot more piecing!

Right now I am wishing that I did not have so many things started. I really should get some of them finished before taking on something like one of these quilts.

It's All About the Quilts

Yesterday at Bayside Quilters our guest speaker was Polly Mollo. Her Program was her Antique Quilts Trunk Show. The quilts she brought to show were OUT OF THIS WORLD! The quilts date from the 1800s to the 1930s. I think if I had to pick a favorite it would be this first one.

I am really feeling compelled that I need to try to make one of these.

My husband was out of town last night so I took a sketch book to bed with me. I didn't get very far though because I fell to sleep.

Another one of my favorites was this sunburst. It looks like it is just a variation of a mariners compass and I designed and made one of those 11 years ago. It was for my son's 15th birthday. I should see if I can find a picture of it to show you.

These two, the pink and purple ones, are also show stoppers. I have never seen a quilt like them. But look at those diamonds, they look like they are all exactly the same. How hard could it really be. I really think that the most difficult part to all of these quilts would be trying to figure out the borders.

A quilt that has been on my bucket list for quite some time is the Giant Dahlia. They are absosutely stunning!

Several years ago I made a Lone Star for a wedding gift, but I would like to make another one to have for myself. This Lone Star is another WOW quilt.

There is something about these large quilts that take my breath away. I LOVE this large applique. It is so simple yet so stunning.

Let's not forget about the quilting. I am always interested in how a quilt is quilted. These feathers just knock your socks off!

This quilting design I had never seen before. From a distance it looks like pine branches, but when you get close you can see that it is long thin feathers. I might have to give that a try sometime.

I guess you can tell that yesterday was a pretty great day for me.

Joseph's Coat at the Bayside Quilters

Everyone got at least one block completed.

Cool Stars

She said that she just wanted the stars emphasized, so I went around the stars and through the centers and just loopy stippled the rest.

Friday night at the 7-Sisters Quilt Guild I finished up 2 tops. The First one is my Trash to Treasure Pineapple Quilt that I posted about here, here, and here. I just love how that Jane Sassaman print looks for the border. I did not want to try to piece the border so I put in the red corners. Turns out I really like the red corners!

I also got borders put on this one.The center blocks were leftovers from another quilt. I had thought maybe I could use it for a baby quilt. Its number came up in September for the UFO Challenge. There is a dear person in my life that just loves my other quilt like this. I thought that maybe if I added borders I could give this one to her. So, yes it is my September UFO and yes, and I am behind again, but I do hope to get it done soon.

Therefore, for my stash report this week, I did use up some fabric Friday night for borders and binding. I do not have the backs for these 2 quilts figured out yet so that will be counted at a later date. Yesterday my daughter and I went to JoAnn's for stuff for her Halloween Costume. I really have a problem going into a place that sells fabric and not buying any for myself. (I think I need a 12 step program.) Anyway, I got 2 yards of a beautiful solid green that I had not seen before.

I just had to purchase fabric this week. Remember I told you about my September UFO here. In order to make it larger I needed fabric for borders. I had no left over fabric that I could even piece for borders because when I made my circle quilt I used what was left on the back. I bought enough solid red to also use as an inner border on my Trash to Treasure Pineapple.

I got these 16 blocks finished and put together on Saturday. I will probably use the red for an inner border and the Jane Sassaman print will be the outer border.

This is my quilt that was chosen for the UFO Challenge for September. It is a baby quilt that would just need to be quilted and bound, but I am thinking about making it larger. There is someone in my life who deserves a quilt and I think she would love the red and aqua. Now the challenge will be to find the right fabrics to border it. I don't need to have it right now but would like to have it by Christmas. So, if I don't get fabric for it real soon I will do something else on my UFO list for September.

Hurricane Irene Quilt

Saturday morning I was looking at some quilting blogs, like I do on so many mornings, and came across a quilt I really wanted to make. They were predicting that we would get hit pretty hard with Hurricane Irene. I thought it would be nice to make something this weekend to commemorate the hurricane.

When I saw this quilt I knew immediately that I wanted to make one. I first saw it at In Color Order where Jeni had it posted as one of her favorites of the week. Today I thought I should find where the quilt originated from so I could give the proper credit. The quilt inspiration and tutorial can be found here at Jenn Of All Trades. Since I did not find the tutorial until today I did it my own way.

Yesterday afternoon I proceeded to make mine figuring it out myself. I had the top and back finished in about 2 1/2 hours.

The way I made mine was to sew together a 6 inch strip of white to a 2 1/2 inch strip of orange. Then I took my 6 1/2 inch square ruler and skewed it to cut a block. I turned the ruler a little different each cut so the blocks are not exactly the same.

I had 48 blocks. I wanted the quilt to be square. I did not feel like getting the fabric out and cutting again to make 1 more block so the quilt could be 7 x 7 blocks. Therefore the quilt is just 6 x 6 blocks and I put the left over blocks on the back.

Here it is loaded on the longarm ready to be quilted.

I finished quilting it last evening and put the binding on today. The whole quilt was done during Hurricane Irene. We didn't get hit as bad by the hurricane as we thought we would. We did end up getting about 12 inches of rain. The winds were at its worst from about 4AM to 7AM. We do know a lot of people without power, but fortunately we never lost ours. Now the sun is out and it is a beautiful day. The top picture was just taken outside.

August UFO is Bound and Finished

I put the binding on my August UFO today.

This scrappy top was made from a block exchange with my mom and sisters in 2004-2005.

In July 2004, My mom, 2 younger sisters, niece, daughter and myself went to the Outdoor Quilt Show in Sisters, Oregon.

Up to that point we had several block exchanges. We were wanting to do another but was not sure what we wanted to do. We saw this quilt at the Quilt Show and all agreed we wanted to do something similar.

We got a marbled black for the block centers that we all used. They were cut 2 1/2 inches square. Each block had to have 4 rounds of different fabrics any width. The raw block needed to measure 8 1/2 inches.

I put my top together about 3 to 4 years ago at a retreat put on by Peggy's Sewing Center.

I also pieced the back at this retreat. I had planned to use black cornerstones. I had all of the sashing and cornerstones put together. When I put them into the top I did not like it at all. since I already had all of the sashing and cornerstones put together I decided to put them on the back. I also had 4 extra blocks that I put on the back.

August UFO is Quilted
